1. Brief description of what you do
I am currently practicing as a clinical hospital pharmacist specialising in Aged and Palliative care pharmacy practice. I am heavily
involved in creating education resources for medical, allied health and nursing professionals in my clinical practice as well in my
consulting roles.
2. What led you to become a medical writer?
As a clinician it is imperative for me to stay up to date with the latest advancements in healthcare. Writing enables me to contribute to improving public health by making medical information accessible. It also allows me to combine my scientific knowledge with creative writing skills. I have a genuine passion for clinical education which has enabled me to create my writing niche in creating continuing professional development (CPD) resources.
3. What do you enjoy most about being a medical writer?
The research that goes into finding credible resources for my writing excites me the most. There is so much available information now, that reading all of it, critically analysing the evidence base and then writing in user-friendly language makes me enjoy the process. Moreover, when creating resources for CPD, I get to learn a lot of non-pharmacy related topics!
4. What has been one of your career highlights as a medical writer and why?
I lead the writing of Australia’s first advanced geriatric medicine pharmacy practice pathway. This was a challenging but extremely
rewarding experience. As a clinician writing the content, I had practical knowledge of the subject matter but then collaborating with other
writers for other speciality areas, offered a great learning opportunity as well!
5. What has been one of the greatest challenges for you as a medical writer and how have you addressed this?
Challenges with AI are very real in medical writing. Issues with job security, appropriate remuneration do exist.
However, quality control and algorithmic bias exists and may not create high quality accurate content. However, it may help with drafting
and editing. Therefore, AI cannot replace us, it compliments us!
6. What advice would you give fellow writers or people considering a career in medical writing?
I would highly recommend researching the market first. Take on assignments that align with your values, experience and education will make
this journey rewarding. Also, clarifying expectations at the beginning of assignments is critical.
7. What led you to join AMWA?
I read about the mentoring program that AMWA provides. When I first started with this journey, I had the pleasure of speaking with an experienced writer mentor from AWMA board. They helped me clarify my goals and find my niche! AWMA conference is also something I look forward to each year - great networking opportunity and meeting like-minded professionals!
