Early Career Award 2021 - Winner Announcement

We are delighted to announce the winner of the 2021 Early Career Award as Manuela Callari! Manuela’s article on Chronic Pain and COVID-19 was praised by guest judge Justin Coleman, who wrote “this year’s award winner, whose rigour reflects her background in PhD research, has transitioned admirably into a more journalistic style. You never have to read a sentence twice, but read on because you want to know more”.

Manuela has completed a PhD in Medical Science and conducted academic research on anti-cancer therapeutics. She has completed a Bachelor and Master's degree in Material Science and a Graduate Certificate in Science Communication. Her research work has been published in several peer-reviewed and high impact factor journals, and presented at both local and international conferences over the course of her academic career. As a freelancer, Manuela's work has been published in The Saturday Paper, Cosmos Magazine, The Medical Republic, Mongabay, Warraingal Publications (Health & PE and Nutridate), amongst others.

About her ethos as a medical writer, Manuela says "my aim is to report with rigour to help my readers navigate medical research's complexity and make informed decisions". It is fair to say that Manuela excelled in this goal in her winning article.

We extend a huge congratulations to Manuela. Her winning article can be viewed here.
